Oakland, CA – On Tuesday, Oakland lawmakers finally took steps to end its Covid eviction moratorium for good on July 15th. However, the proposed ordinance has many local Small Housing Providers (SHP) still wondering how they will be repaid back rent that is owed.
On Monday, April 24th, small housing providers from Business and Housing Network (BAHN), In-It-Together (IIT), and East Bay Rental Housing Association (EBRHA) will hold a press conference at EBRHA’s office to discuss the City’s proposal, and how the proposal still puts many SHP in financial jeopardy.
After three years and approximately $500 million in unpaid rent to Oakland’s rental owners, most are SHP. Many can’t afford three more months of unpaid rent. “Ending July 15th means thousands more dollars lost for me. I can’t afford that!” says John Williams, a SHP in West Oakland who is currently in danger of foreclosure due to nonpayment of rent.
Adding pressure to Oakland’s lawmakers, a Federal lawsuit filed by Housing Providers of America (HPA) and the Pacific Legal Foundation challenging the legality of the moratoriums that extended 16 months after funds for the City’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) were exhausted, is proceeding through the US District Court – California Northern District.
Speakers will include BAHN, IIT, and EBRHA property owners impacted by the moratoriums, as well as EBRHA CEO Derek Barnes, and HPA spokesperson Seneca Scott.
